The Robert H. Storz Family Rose Garden was dedicated in September of 1997. This formally designed garden is planted with nearly 2,000 rose plants. Hybrid tea, grandiflora, floribunda, climbing and shrub roses are all planted in this garden. Two peak blooming seasons occur; the first around the end of May and the second beginning around the 15th of September and continuing through frost. The garden is colorful throughout the season with other plantings including annuals and perennials.
An armillary sphere sundial adorns the center of the rose garden. It was designed by Nebraska artist Milt Heinrich. The outer horizontal ring represents a projection of the Earth’s equator. The thick tilted ring represents the path of the sun and planets. It gives central standard time and daylight-saving time and is extremely accurate. The stainless steel sphere is five feet in diameter and has a polished black granite base.
A series of beautiful white trellises with climbing roses leads to the large arbor area that provides a lovely setting for weddings and other events. For information about rental arrangements, please contact the Lauritzen Gardens rental coordinator at (402) 346-4002, ext. 261.
