JUNE 

Plein Air Pastels
Teen and adult workshop
Tuesdays, June 8, 15, 22 and 29 and July 26
6 to 8 p.m.
Work outdoors, in the spirit of plein air painters, to capture the color and light of the natural world by drawing from observation using pastels.
$50/Lauritzen Gardens or Joslyn Art Museum member, $58/non-member for the series

Flower Arrangement of the Month: The Nose Knows
Adult workshop
Saturday, June 12
10 to 11:30 a.m.
Are you ready for the sights and scents of the growing season? A garden is full of wonderful fragrances. Join us for this hands-on workshop as we create a beautiful, aromatic arrangement to brighten your home. We will use the garden for inspiration as we create a unique arrangement with fragrant flowers and branches.
$29/member, $35/non-member

Leaf-casting Workshop
Adult workshop
Saturday, June 19
1 to 3 p.m.
Join local artist Billie Shelton to learn how to design and make a leaf-casting ornament for your garden. We will select a large leaf and turn it into a work of art. Participants are encouraged to bring a few leaves with them as only a limited amount will be available at the workshop. All materials included.

Nature Photography
Adult class
Saturday, June 26
9:30 to 11 a.m.
Join local nature photographer Bill Swinarski of Swinarski Photography as he "develops" the secrets of garden photography. He will share tips and techniques for taking beautiful photographs in the outdoor garden. The first half of the class will be focused on tips and techniques in the classroom. Participants will then explore the garden during the second half, photographing several botanical subjects. Please, bring your digital or film camera; macro lenses are encouraged.
$10/member, $13/non-member 

Yoga in the Garden
Adult class
Monday, June 21 and 28 
6:30 to 8 p.m.
Enjoy the beauty and tranquilty of Lauritzen Gardens while learning basic yoga poses, sun salutations and breathing techniques in this five-week session. Open to all skill levels, this class will allow you to unwind and increase your flexibilty and strength while connecting with nature. The class will be led by Teresa Murphy, RYT, owner/director of One Tree Yoga. Pleas, wear comfortable clothing. All are encouraged to bring a mat, two blacks, a belt and a blanket. Classes will be held outside, weather permitting. 
$50/member, $60/non-member

JULY 

Flower Arrangement of the Month: Dazzling Floral Jewelry

10 to 11:30 a.m. 
Join florist Doris Helfrich as she uses the bold colors of floral wire and artificial flowers to fashion a chic and unique bracelet and brooch. Your friends will think you shop at the chicest of boutiques!

Sphagnum Baskets 
Adult workshop
Tuesday, July 13 
6 to 7:30 p.m.
Show off those midsummer blooms! Join Lauritzen Gardens Chief Operational Officer Les Lutz for an evening of fun and creativity as he helps each participant mold and create their very own sphagnum basket for their home garden.

Plein Air Painting
Teen and adult workshop
Tuesdays, July 13, 20, 27 and August 3 and 10 
5:30 to 8 p.m.
For beginners this class at Lauritzen Gardens will teach basic plain air oil painting techniques. Advanced students will relish in the opportunity to paint from observation within the many meticulously landscaped gardens. After a tour of paintings from the age of Impressionism at the Joslyn, all classes will be held within the gardens at Lauritzen. Instructor: Peter Yesis

Making Room for "Nature Play"

Saturday, July 24 
10 to 11:30 a.m.
In his bestselling book "Last Child in the Woods", Richard Louv brought to light research showing the positive effect contact with nature has on the physical, emotional, social and creative development of children. His prescription is simple - kids need time in nature. This class will present the principles of "natural play" and how to create a place or places in the home landscape where children can experience the joys and benefits of nature-based play.

Vermicomposting

Saturday, July 24 
1:30 to 3 p.m.

Join Lauritzen Gardens Garden Educator and worm enthusiast Jordan Sherbondy to learn the basics of how to create and maintain a worm bin. It makes a simple under-the-counter natural garbage disposal system a lot of fun, and you'll have new friends!

Flower Arrangement of the Month: Garden Flowers

Join florist Doris Helfrich as we enjoy the bounty of our gardens and the fruits of our labor. Colorful summer flowers and vegetable greenery will collide and collaborate in these arrangements!

Terracotta Fountains 
Adult workshop
Monday, August 23 
6 to 7:30 p.m.
Every garden needs a source of water. Fountains provide a sense of serenity, listening pleasure and attract a wide variety of wildlife to your garden. Come join us in creating an easy and beauitful terracotta fountain. All supplies and pump included.

Tree Selection and Planting 
Adult class
Saturday, August 28 
10 to 11:30 a.m.
Sorting through all the names to find the perfect tree for your situation can be daunting, and information on planting techniques can be confusing. Learn about the main types and landscapes uses of trees, recommended species for Omaha and the Midwest and the latest recommendations for planting and care. Fall is an excellent time to plant trees, making late summer a great time to get ready.

SEPTEMBER

Flower Arrangements of the Month: Floral Cakes

10 to 11:30 a.m.
You won't want to eat this cake (although you might be tempted)! Celebrate Patriot's Day with us as we create a lovely patriotic "cake" out of fresh cut florals. This class will be your inspiration for many cakes to come!

The Ancient Art of Bonsai

Saturday, September 18 
10 to 11:30 a.m. 
Join Lauritzen Gardens Chief Operational Officer and resident bonsai expert Les Lutz as he guides participants through the bonsai plants selection process and demonstrates the technique of this ancient art. 
$10/member, $13/non-member 

Planning for Color and Texture in the Garden 
Adult class
Saturday, September 18 
12:30 to 2 p.m. 
Find out how to obatin a dimensional landscape through proper selection of plant material for both texture and color. Learn to utilize unique ways to make your garden more interesting and will have your neighbors asking for your new expertise.

Sign Up Early!
Our programs fill quickly. Classes are subject to minimum and maximum enrollment, so please register at least one week in advance. Additional students are not added to sold-out courses, however, we will place your name on a waiting list and notify you if there is a cancellation. 


After You Register

We will contact you the week of the program to confirm your enrollment. 

 

Please dress accordingly to the weather for all outdoor programs. No rain or snow dates are planned. 

 

Upon arrival at the garden, please check in at the admission desk. Classroom doors are open one half-hour before starting time. 

 

Program registration includes admission to the garden for the entire day of the class. 

 

Children or guests who are not registered for the program will not be allowed into the class or garden without garden admission or program registration. Children’s programs, with the exception of programs for 3- to 5-year-olds, do not include adult admission to the garden. 

 
Refunds and Cancellations

If you must cancel your registration for a program, your registration fees will be refunded if notice is received at least one week before the program. 

 

Courses with insufficient registration are sometimes cancelled. If a class is cancelled, you will be notified by phone as early as possible. Full refunds are given for classed cancelled due to insufficient registration.
